This is a beautifully preserved Victorian child's book with a deep inset glassy pastedown decorativly framed front cover. Natural history in the guise of two children walking along the beach and discovering the creatures of the sea together.

"The writer's object in the following, unpretending pages has been twofold; to instruct, and to amuse. To instruct, by bringing before the young reader a variety of valuable details in relation to the common objects of te sea-shore and the denizens of the mighty deep; to amuse, by clothing these details in lively language, by illustrating them with anecdote and quotation, and by interweaving with them certain episodes of peril, enterprise and adventure."

Author unstated but attributed to Mrs. Samuel Greg (Mary Needham ) author of three other children's books ("Little Walter, a Mother's First Lessons in Religion for the Younger Classes" 1855 "Walter in the Woods or, The Trees and Common Objects of the Forest" 1870 and "Walter at the Sea-Side or Curious Objects at the Shore and the Deep" 1869).

16mo. 6" x 4" ; Original maroon cloth with arched panel and decorative framing, illustrated inset pastedown on beveled boards. Blind stamp decoration on back board. Gilt title on decorated spine. Rubbing but with very minimal wear to front and back cover.

160 pages, all tight to the spine and 46 in text and 4 full page illustrations. AEG (All edges gilt). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Scattered foxing, but text mostly clean. Penned name and location on FFEP. No other marks within the book.
